A nice day trip from Bishkek is national park Ala-Archa, located at only 30km from the capital. This mountainous area is perfect for hiking and if you feel adventurous you can even bring your own tent and camp on top of the mountains. The park is made out of an alpine valley, called Alplager, with a big river flowing through it. Mountains can be seen from every angle and the highest peaks are covered in snow all summer long.
In the park are several trails you can follow according to your hiking experience. The easiest trail is a three km loop in the valley following the river, this one is accessible to everybody and can even be walked with little children. If you want a little more challenge you can hike up to the waterfall following the Ratsek trail. This hike is pretty steep at some parts and takes about three hours one way but is still suitable for not experienced hikers. Following this trail even further will lead you all the way up to the glacier viewpoint at 3370m where you will also find the Ratsek hut where it is possible to spend the night.
To get to the national park you can either take a taxi or public transport. Marshrutka 265 will bring you all the way to the park gate (if you pay the 30 additional soms) and from there you can walk, take a taxi or hitchhike the last 12 km to the actual start of the hiking routes. The entrance fee is paid at the gate and for pedestrians this is 80 SOM. When entering by car you will pay 120 SOM.
